  • Laboratory tours and demonstrations for parents and children in 5th to 7th grades from the Pasadena area. Interactive discussions with high school student groups from the LA Unified School District pertaining to their "Future in Science." Use this forum to impart excitement for “applying chemical tools to problems in energy science”.
  • Participant and speaker at Young Black Scholars organization (LA Unified Schools) at Caltech to increase minority participation in the sciences (2002-present). Participate in Caltech’s Bring Your Children to Work Day (2001-present).
  • PBS Documentary at Caltech focusing on “Artificial Photosynthesis”. Participated in the development of this documentary, scheduled to be aired in 2007, as consultant and also as one of the featured scientists.
  • 2000-present. Faculty participant in the Caltech-Berkeley-BP MC2 Program. This program explores chemical research of potentially broad impact to global energy needs. Our group’s work has focused on C-H activation, C1 chemistry (CO and CO2), and H2 evolution in the context of water-splitting. Reviews are twice per year and both my student/postdoc participants, in addition to myself, travel for onsite visits at BP facilities. These have included chemical plants in Hull, England, and Nikiski, Alaska. The program has exposed the broader concerns of the energy industry to all of the academic participants over the six years it has been active. Recent review meetings attended: London, England (June ’06); Berkeley, California (December ’06).
