- Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program coordinator for the MIT chemistry department. Advises many undergraduates regarding entry into research. In connection with this, instituted an annual Course 5 (chemistry) Undergraduate Research Symposium at which undergraduate researchers present their work in both poster and oral formats. A prize is given for the best contribution to the Symposium, this being the Strem Prize for Excellence in Undergraduate Research in Chemistry, funded by Strem Chemical Company through the generosity of Mike Strem.
- Interaction with chemical industry: currently the companies Sigma-Aldrich, TCI Chemicals, and Thermphos are interested either in commercializing compounds discovered in the Cummins group or else in the prospects for useful future discoveries.
